4 Odors You Don’t Want Coming From Your Heat Pump
Heat pumps don’t smell like anything when they’re working properly, so smelling anything from yours is a sign of trouble. Some heat pump odors are worse than others. Here are four that you don’t want in your Currituck Mainland, NC, home:
Musty Odor
A musty or stale odor that resembles dirty socks is usually caused by biological contaminants growing in your ducts or near damp evaporator coils. The best way to prevent this is to schedule regular maintenance. We recommend scheduling maintenance for your heat pump in the early spring and early fall.
Rotten Fish Smell
Your heat pump might emit a rotten fish smell if there is a problem with your wiring or if an overheating motor is melting plastic components. Either way, this is a serious issue that you need to address as soon as possible.
Rotten Egg Smell
Your heat pump might smell like rotten eggs if a small animal crawled inside it or your ducts and died. It’s not a sign of a natural gas leak since a heat pump doesn’t use natural gas. It still isn’t a pleasant smell even if it isn’t dangerous, so have your heat pump and your ducts cleaned to find and remove the source of the odor.
Burning Smell
A burning smell is usually caused by an electrical problem or your heat pump’s motor overheating. What you’re smelling is the plastic or rubber components of your heat pump melting or burning, which is a serious issue that needs to be addressed immediately. Scheduling a heat pump repair if you suspect this problem.
Your heat pump should never emit any odors when it’s working properly. If you notice these alarming smells in your Currituck Mainland, home, contact North Beach Services Heating and Cooling right away to schedule heat pump repairs or a tuneup.
